The biggest part of SAD is understanding it, then taking the small to steps to correct. The bigger steps can come as you feel better. And no, this is not medical advice. This is from a former SAD person who is now glad. And it took decades of research and application. The summary is this. We are born from the dark, live in light and sleep at night.

And it’s as basic as eating what is in (your) season and what you like. Getting natural light or using a SAD light and last, that thing we all dread first thing in the morning which is exercise. Not crazy stuff, just enough to breath deep. We were given light, lungs and leaf for a reason. So lets begin with the leaves and/or what is attached to them.

Apples, beets, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chicory, clementine, cranberries, grapefruit, hemp, kale, leeks, lemons, oranges, parsnips, pears, persimmons, shallots, spinach, sweet potatoes, tangerines, turnips and squash. Just eat what you like or can stand to mix in shake or hide in the gravy. The point is, your body and mind are calling for a change. Deny and pay, reward and reap!

The next easy way is light as it usually comes every morning and free! If that does not work, the “Happy Light” or simply a SAD approved light. The ones I use are the Happy Light and I pack a ten-dollar screw-in Grow Light bulb when traveling.

And lastly, exercise which can be as simple as doing anything to bring more oxygen in. That could be chasing the kids, dog or cat around, maybe a few sit-ups or a walk. Heck, combine a daylight walk for the natural light and lungs, take an apple a day to keep the sad away.

If none or a combination of all is not working, consider the last resort. It does not have to be an expensive resort or a long getaway. The positive energy that build before, during and after a few days away is stimulating and could keep memories of spring and summer alive until they arrive!
